In the early 20thcentury, the art culture in France took a dynamic turn from conventional art to adopt a contemporary form of art known as cubism. Cubism burgeoned between 1907 and 1911. While this may seem simple enough to some and very easy to understand, there are some who feel that these paintings are the representation of someone who has a split personality. A great desire to penetrate into the inner nature of the three-dimensional object, to comprehend the essence of space which it occupies, as well as that space, within limits of which it is situated, brought a closer analysis to life, making all the familiar surface contours of an object deprive of their usual opacity.An impenetrable screen of appearance was forced to undergo crystallization, which gave it more transparency. If the goal is to portray the concept of the subject itself, where exactly it is located, far or near, it is irrelevant. In it, we can clearly see that the subject matter is intended to be representational, while the different points of view, different lighting and different planes give us a sense of movement and simultaneity that heighten our understanding of the subject’s presence. Analytic Cubism was certainly hailed as revolutionary at the time, but not by the public: it was other artists, critics and dealers who were most impressed.
During this period, the work of Picasso and Braque became so similar that their paintings are almost indistinguishable. But these are only the signs and the symbols of those objects, not the objects themselves. Their work seemed non-representational, though it nonetheless contained subject matter, so in addition to whatever the analytical cubists intended for viewers to feel, they also felt other things, on a subconscious level. All sort of figurativeness disappears. Cubism thus set itself not a pictorial but a philosophical task. Each facet is set on the edge in order to allow us to assess the volumes lying beneath its surface. There are two distinct types of cubism; analytical and synthetic, the main difference between them being in the composition. The early phase, generally considered to run from 1908–12 is called analytical cubism and the second is called synthetic cubism.
