When the Spaniards arrived in 1527, their dominance was stymied by an already entrenched and semi-organised power, and they were only able to establish outposts in northern Mindanao and Zamboanga.It was only in the middle of the 19th century that the Spaniards, with the advantages of superior firearms and steam power, were able to make substantial inroads in Mindanao and assert their sovereignty. Other groups didn’t agree that limited autonomy within a federalised system was adequate (of course, some objected because they weren't considered when divvying up the spoils); as a result a breakaway group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), was established in 1978. During the 1960s it experienced a phenomenal population increase and very rapid development. The island of Mindanao is inhabited by groups of various religious descent and identity, namely Indigenous Peoples, Muslim-Filipinos, and Christian migrants. Archaeological findings on the island point to evidence of human activity dating back about ten thousand years.

Insurgency also is another reason why poverty and violence dominated the region. Mindanao’s problem can be rooted from many reasons. Apo volcano is an a basaltic to basaltic-andesitic stratovolcano and part of the Central Mindanao Arc, but its volcanic history is poorly known. When the Philippine army attempted to restore order, fierce fighting often resulted. Peace talks resumed late in 2009, but subsequently there were occasional outbreaks of fighting. Two months later, much of the city was destroyed, with hundreds killed and thousands evacuated, and parts of the city remained in the control of the militants. After an unrealistic proposal to include the region in a superconfederacy called Maphilindo fell flat, Marcos initiated a program to train Muslim commandos from Mindanao with vague plans to promote unrest in Sabah, but the secret was exposed and ended with most of the guerrilla recruits being killed under mysterious circumstances.In 1976 an agreement was struck with one of the rebel groups, the Moro Islamic National Liberation Front (MNLF), establishing the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM); in 1996 the MNLF was legitimised as a political group by Manila.

In late May 2017 Philippine security forces went to Marawi City to arrest Isnilon Hapilon, the ISIS–designated emir of Southeast Asia. The arrival of the Spanish in the late 16th cent. united the various Muslim groups in a war against the conquerors that lasted some 300 years.
