ulnar collateral ligament wrist pain

When the ligament is torn, the tether is too long and the bones move too much. This ligament prevents the thumb from pointing too far away from the hand and supports pinch and grasp activities, acting like a hinge to keep the main thumb joint (the metacarpophalangeal joint) stable.A sprain to the ulnar collateral ligament occurs when the ligament gets stretched or torn, usually as a result of an injury. A common cause of ulnar wrist pain is a fall onto an outstretched hand.

The ulnar collateral ligament of the wrist joint (internal lateral ligament, ulnar carpal collateral ligament) is a rounded cord, attached above to the end of the styloid process of the ulna, and dividing below into two fasciculi, one of which is attached to the medial side of the triquetral bone, the other to the pisiform and flexor retinaculum. This can break bones in the wrist. The majority of the diagnoses involving ulnar wrist pain may be established with a detailed history-taking, thorough physical examination, and standard radiography.

Sports like tennis, golf, and football can sometimes bend the wrist back too far and this can damage tendons and ligaments. There may be bruising, tenderness at the bottom of the thumb, swelling and/or an inability to grasp items between the thumb and index finger.Any type of injury in which the thumb is pulled away from the index finger can result in an ulnar collateral ligament sprain.

In order to understand this condition it is important to understand the anatomy and function of the wrist and hand. Figure 1. An ulnar collateral ligament injury also referred to as a UCL injury, is a common injury to the inside of the elbow caused by repeated stress due to overhead movement. Severe tears usually mean that the ulnar collateral ligament is completely torn.Depending on the severity of the sprain, an ulnar collateral ligament sprain may or may not hurt right away. Figure 2.
This can lead to pain, a sense of instability or looseness, and an inability to work or play sports. The ulnar collateral ligament can also be injured with repetitive gripping between the thumb and index finger leading to gradual loosening of the ulnar collateral ligament. The diagnosis and treatment of ulnar collateral ligament sprains varies depending on the severity of the injury.

The ulnar collateral ligament is on the medial (the side of the elbow that’s next to the body) side of the elbow, and the lateral collateral is on the outside. The UCL is a strong band of tissue that holds the bones together and controls movement on the inside of the elbow. The ulnar collateral ligament complex is … The ulnar collateral ligament is a ligament on the inside of the thumb that connects the metacarpal bone to the first phalanx at the base (bottom) of the thumb. Ulnar impaction, an ulna longer than the radius, which can cause ulnar wrist pain.

It helps connect your upper arm to your forearm and is necessary for any bending and movement of the elbow. A ligament serves as a tether between the bones. Regenerative Therapy for Tears of the Ulnar Collateral Ligament and Pain in the Elbow.

The severity of the sprain may be mild (grade I), moderate (grade II) or severe (grade III). As the name implies, regenerative therapies are treatments which attempt to restore damaged tissues.

When the inner ligament of the elbow is torn or strained, it is known as a UCL tear or an ulnar collateral ligament injury. The ulnar collateral ligament is a thick band of ligamentous tissue that forms a triangular shape along the medial elbow.

Unlike conventional treatments, regenerative therapies are focused on treating the cause of the pain, rather than the pain itself.

It can result from injury to bones, cartilage, ligaments or tendons. Injury to these can cause ulnar wrist pain. The wrist bones and joints are shown here.

The ulnar collateral ligament is a poorly developed thickening of the joint capsule that arises from the base of the ulnar styloid. For example, falling on an outstretched arm and landing on the tip of the thumb.
The ulnar collateral ligament is located in the inner portion of the elbow.

Ulnar wrist pain (pain on the pinkie side of the wrist) is very common.
