Chytridiomycosis is an infectious disease of amphibians caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd).It an emerging disease that is significantly impacting amphibian populations across the globe. We have summarised what to look out for with this disease below. Many of them appear to be caused by a newly discovered fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). For example, in mountain yellow legged frog (Rana muscosa) tadpoles suffer generally mild sublethal effects, with most mortality occurring at metamorphosis when there is a rapid production of newly keratinized skin tissue. According to researchers, the fungus consumes the keratin in the skin of the infected animal and causes the amphibian skin to thicken.
